The movie takes place in a gritty and crime-ridden Gotham City, where we meet Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a struggling stand-up comedian who works as a children's party entertainer. Arthur's life is a constant struggle, and he suffers from mental health issues, including depression and a neurological disorder that causes him to laugh uncontrollably. One fateful day, Arthur's life takes a dark turn when he is beaten by a group of thugs on the subway, and he subsequently kills them in self-defense. This incident sets off a chain reaction, and Arthur's transformation into the Joker begins.
