Before the acronym LGBTQ became standard, the community was often referred to simply as "the gay community." Within that space, trans people—then often labeled as "transsexuals" or "transvestites"—occupied a liminal space. They were frequently tolerated as entertainers or sidekicks but rarely centered as leaders.

Gay and lesbian spaces, historically defined by same-sex attraction, sometimes struggle to accommodate trans people whose sexual orientation may be straight, gay, or bisexual relative to their affirmed gender. Furthermore, the rise of trans-exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs) within some lesbian circles—particularly in the UK—has reopened old wounds and forced LGBTQ+ organizations to take explicit stands against transphobia.
