Originally developed between 2002 and 2004, Shantae Advance was intended to be the series' second entry. However, developer WayForward was unable to find a publisher at the time due to the low sales of the original Game Boy Color title. The project was shelved for nearly 20 years until a full revival was announced in 2023, using the original development tools to finish the game specifically for the GBA hardware.
