The film is a Rorschach test. Is von Trier a misogynist? The film’s thesis—that “nature is Satan’s church” and that female nature is inherently evil—is horrifying. Yet, the film is filtered through the mind of a woman who believes this about herself. The true villain is not “woman” but the idea of female evil that has been projected onto her by history (the witch trials). She internalizes this hate, and it destroys her. The film is less a misogynist tract than a horror film about the consequences of misogyny. This is the thesis of the film: Once
