The genius of McFadden’s writing is that she makes you believe you know exactly where this is going: Rich wife abuses poor housemaid; housemaid falls for the husband; there’s a crazy woman in the attic. You’ve seen this movie before. But then, right around the 50% mark, the book detonates a nuclear bomb of a plot twist. The second half of the book is a masterclass in tension, cat-and-mouse games, and satisfying, brutal revenge.
