The story follows Odile, a widowed schoolteacher, who flees Paris with her two young children as German troops advance on the city. After their car is destroyed in a German air raid, they are rescued by Yvan, a resourceful and mysterious 17-year-old delinquent. The group takes refuge in an abandoned country house, forming a "makeshift family". Within this isolated sanctuary, the social and moral rules of their previous lives begin to dissolve, leading to complex and intense personal dynamics between Odile and Yvan.
