Caifanes se formó en 1987 en la Ciudad de México, México. La banda estaba integrada por Saúl Hernández (voz y guitarra), Alfonso Espinosa (guitarra), Sabino (bajo) y Carlos "El Diablo" Sánchez (batería). El nombre de la banda proviene de la palabra "caifán", que se refiere a un tipo de lagartija que habita en la península de Baja California.
